Andrew Chapman CMM, President of the Marina Industries Association and COO at Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia – AM.

Having served as a Director of the Marina Industries Association (MIA) since 2005 when it was a volunteer association without staff, Andrew’s contributions in supporting and professionalising what is now a $2.4 billion industry have been significant.

His leadership and contributions have delivered a thriving international industry body that supports and represents the interests of over 340 corporate members, including 291 marina and boatyard businesses in Australia, which are responsible for employing over 21,000 Australians.

He ensured the industry had specialised training available for its workforce, was supported by quality assurance and environmental accreditation programs, and that research was undertaken to quantify the industry’s economic contribution.

When asked about receiving this recognition Andrew said, “I was very surprised and humbled by the news of the award but immensely proud of what I have been part of over the many years of my involvement in the industry and the MIA.”

The Australian marina industry is regarded as one of the world’s best.  It delivers premium boating and maintenance facilities, which attract vessels from around the globe as cruising destinations and, importantly, for their maintenance requirements, generating significant expenditure and employment opportunities.

Underscoring the influence of the Australian marina industry globally, is the MIA’s biennial International Marinas Conference & Trade Exhibition, which under Andrew’s leadership, is now the largest of its kind outside of the United States.

Suzanne Davies MIA CEO commented, “Andrew’s leadership, unwavering commitment, time and the gracious sharing of his knowledge, over two decades has benefited so many professionals in our industry today and has directly resulted in the expanded reach and scope of the Association which benefits the entire industry.

“His contributions to our industry’s success should not be underestimated.”

Industry veteran Jeff d’Albora established the industry association in the early 2000s and brought Andrew on in the early days to help.

Commenting on Andrew’s recognition, Jeff stated, “During the past 20 years, Andrew has worked tirelessly as a Director of the MIA and has strongly supported the development and advancement of education in the industry.

“It’s great to see his years of dedication have been recognised and rewarded.”

Taking the reins from d’Albora on his retirement, Andrew has held the offices of Chairman and President of the MIA for the last 15 years.

As is the case for all MIA directors, this a voluntary role that receives no bursary and is completely self-funded.  He has delivered hundreds of lectures at MIA management courses and has been responsible for writing much of the training material.

Along with Jeff d’Albora, he was integral in establishing the partnership with British Marine to form the Global Marina Institute, under which it delivers the Intermediate and Advanced Marina Management training courses and accredits Certified Marina Managers (CMMs).

More than 500 industry professionals have been accredited as CMMs globally and many have benefited from the training and their credentials and are now working all around the world.

In addition to his contributions to the marina industries, Andrew was recognised for his support of youth. He has been Chair of the Advancing Youth Foundation South Australia since 2016 and acts as a Trustee for the Prince Alfred College Foundation.

The MIA, on behalf of the entire industry, congratulate Andrew on this important recognition and thank him for his contributions to our great industry.
