The Boating Industry Association (BIA) has launched the 2024 Apprentice of the Year Awards.

The annual awards recognise apprentices’ contributions to the marine industry and highlight the importance of training and career development within the sector.

Open to any fourth-year apprentice working with a BIA member company, the awards will feature state-specific recognitions for Queensland, New South Wales, and South Australia, culminating in an overall winner to be announced at the Sydney International Boat Show in August.

The Australian marine industry reported a turnover of A$9.64bn in 2023 and employed more than 32,000 people. Around 75 percent of these businesses employ local workers and support local communities, and the role apprentices have in the industry’s future is vital to its ongoing success.

“This annual recognition celebrates the remarkable achievements and contributions of outstanding apprentices in the marine industry,” says BIA CEO Andrew Scott. “The award highlights the importance of nurturing and supporting talent for a thriving future in boating.

“The marine sector offers an amazing array of trades and skills for apprentices who are the life force of the industry.”

The Boating Industry Association is Australia’s peak marine industry body, representing the interests of the sector, businesses, and the wider community of boating enthusiasts.

The 2024 Apprentice of the Year Awards winners will be honoured with a trophy and certificate, along with an A$500 Repco voucher to put towards tools for each state winner. The overall winner will receive an A$1,000 Repco voucher as well as a trip for two to the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in Tasmania next February, including flights and accommodation.

Nominations are now open. Candidates will be evaluated based on their achievements and contributions to their employer, attitude, and willingness to learn and contribute to the industry.

Nominations can be submitted online on BIA’s website and must be returned by 8 July 2024.
