Nimb nirvana

It is the comfort, attention to detail and Scandi-chic that makes the Nimb one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed in around the world.

My suite was perfect; a king-size four poster bed with luxurious linen, a two-person Agape bathtub (plus divine body care products by Danish brand Meraki), a fireplace for the winter months and a mini-bar stocked with the best-of Danish snacks and stylish carafes with a choice of Danish Geranium Gin, Johnnie Walker Black Label, and Vodka. Of course, there was a fresh lime on a black marble plate ready to slice for my in-room aperitif.

If you’re more of a wine drinker, there was an excellent selection of French, Italian and New Zealand wines, and a bottle of Ruinart for the champagne lovers. All the while rugged up inside the softest white bathrobe and slippers which were – for the first time in my life – female-sized and not a one-size-fits-all for a six-foot-tall man with size 44 shoes.

Once you have OD’d on hygge (the Danish word for cosiness), head to the bar for a pre-dinner aperitif. It’s a stunning space with a fabulous and fun list of cocktails named after movies.

There was Pulp Fiction, Saving Private Ryan and the Lion King, to name a few. I opted for the Titanic; Vermouth, Italicus liquor, grapefruit bitters, coconut water, Copenhagen Sparkling Tea Blue and an ice cube shaped like a ship … that’s upturned as if it’s sinking.

Despite a full day of Copenhagen sightseeing planned, the morning after I found myself sleeping in before slowly making my way down to the terrace for the buffet breakfast. I haven’t seen many hotel buffets that include champagne and prosecco to add to orange juice for a morning mimosa.

The Danes are renowned for their baking prowess and if you don’t have at least one Kanelsnegle (Danish cinnamon scroll) during your time in Copenhagen, then you’re not doing it properly!

They are delicious and pair perfectly with a strong Danish coffee. Included in the buffet is choice of a cooked meal, and I once again couldn’t resist a smorrebrod (open sandwich).

Being a perfect, blue-sky, 23-degree day, I headed up to the rooftop pool to spend the rest of the morning. There was plenty of room and shaded sun lounges to set up camp and while away the rest of the afternoon in the infinity pool, which was the perfect temperature.

The view from the rooftop was stunning. In the distance you can watch the Himmelskibet (Star Flyer) ride; an 80-metre-tall swing ride that offers a sky-high view of Copenhagen’s historical centre. The vibe at the pool is uber-relaxed and there is a bar to order snacks and maybe another Mimosa or two.

Staying at the Nimb gives you unlimited access to both the rooftop pool and the Moroccan Hammam downstairs in the wellness centre. The Hammam has a beautiful steam room and relaxation area where you can laze on a day bed, enjoy the free (and very healthy snacks), book a massage or beauty treatment and … take your time.

When you do eventually venture out to the streets of Copenhagen, you’ll see the hotel is in a prime location. Apart from the Tivoli Gardens, nearby is Christiansborg Slot (palace), Rosenborg Slot and SMK and Glyptotek (both excellent art museums). If you’re game, hire a bicycle like the rest of the Danes and check out the fascinating Christiana Free State.
