The Sheraton Grand Mirage Port Douglas sparkles like the many stars that have stayed there since Christopher Skase built the luxury resort in the 80s.

Set on Four Mile Beach, Port Douglas, the Sheraton Grand Mirage offers 147 hectares of lush tropical landscaping, saltwater lagoon pools that stretch for two hectares as well as an 18 hole golf course.

It is Port Douglas’ only five-star, absolute beachfront resort. It was and still is an indulgent playground showcasing lifestyles of the rich and the famous. Think Leo Di Caprio, Mick Jagger and Bill Clinton with the latest celebrity spotting being Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson. After a number of facelifts, the property has been restored to the height of opulence that it was back in its heyday.

The Sheraton was known for extravagance in that time, which included a hot pink jacuzzi, which unfortunately didn’t make the cut after the $40-million renovation, but a touch of the hotel reflects these times through the pink couches and tropical cushions in the lobby.

Also retained from that decadent era is the seafood buffet, offering as much as you can eat of scampi, prawns and crab.

There are many jewels in the crown of this resort but the most outstanding is the pool. Two hectares of saltwater lagoons snake through the resort with pockets of sandy beaches and many a lounge or canopied daybed cabanas to lie back and enjoy the Queensland sunshine.

The cabanas are so sought after they need to be booked and at least $150 has to be spent on poolside food and drinks throughout the day.

Another jewel is the 18-hole golf course. Rated as one of the world’s best resort courses, the 18-hole international standard championship golf course was designed by Peter Thomson. It offers a combination of six par 3, six par 4 and six par 5 holes all within two quite different nines.

The location borders the Coral Sea with a mountain panoramic backdrop.

There is also a putting green and practice bunkers. Golf pros are on hand as well as a Pro Shop with golfing paraphernalia available to purchase or for hire.

For those who prefer tennis, there are seven floodlit courts available. There’s also a gym, a spa and sauna, a dedicated children’s pool and even a 25-metre lap pool.

The accommodation offers 295 rooms and suites made up of two-, three- and four-bedroom Villas, Studio Suites and hotel rooms that include high-speed complimentary wi-fi, 60-inch LCD television, climate control air-conditioning, safe, mini bar and integrated audio phone hub, generous marble bathrooms, featuring rainforest showers, deep soaking baths, plush bathrobes, slippers and elevated pampering with Le Grand Bain bath amenities. There are also private balconies with views of the gardens or lagoon pools.

Decadence continues in some rooms that allow you to step from your private balcony into the pool.

These rooms also offer day lounges, canopied bed heads and marble bathrooms.

A great range of choice is available for dining options including Harrisons by Spencer Patrick, the fine dining and award-winning restaurant boasting a total of nine chefs hats and having been featured on lists such as Gourmet Traveller Food Guide and Delicious Magazine’s Top 100, the casual Feast restaurant with its popular buffet, a cool Beach Eats menu at Lagoons Pool Bar and an array of beverages at the Daintree Bar.

Location is everything and the Sheraton Grand Mirage Port Douglas is a 45-minute drive from the famed Daintree Rainforest with its crocodiles, cultural experiences and forest walks.

It’s just five minutes’ drive away from the restaurants and shops of the town of Port Douglas and of course to the east is the Great Barrier Reef with a myriad of tours to take you to discover snorkelling and diving.

Base yourself at Sheraton Grand Mirage Port Douglas for your next romantic getaway and discover the beauty of this world of reef and rainforest.
