Sinalei Reef Resort & Spa is committed to a sustainable future for the Pacific Islands, pledging its support for the South Pacific Sustainable Tourism Network.

Bringing together likeminded stakeholders from across the region, including individuals, businesses, government agencies and experts, the network aims to safeguard the region’s cultural heritage and ensure the local environment is protected for generations to come.

As early adopters of the network’s Sustainability Monitoring Program, Sinalei Reef Resort & Spa collects and provides regular data on various themes such as energy, water and waste management; pollution; conservation and cultural heritage.

Sinalei Marketing and Business Development Manager, Nelson Annandale, said the program aims to promote collaboration among hotels to implement grassroots initiatives that address pressing island-wide challenges, such as plastic waste reduction.

“By contributing data to this program, we hope to help the region plan for further tourism development and build a case for policy reform,” he said.

“Sinalei Reef Resort & Spa has a solid history of practices dedicated to sustainability and social responsibility, so pledging our alliance with the South Pacific Sustainable Tourism Network is a natural fit.”

The resort is deeply ingrained in the local community and its ethos pays homage to familial ancestors and the stunning Samoan environment.

It supports a long list of local charities, initiatives and community groups via donations, sponsorships and support programs.

“Some of our most noteworthy initiatives include: funding the Palalaua College Cultural Fale in 1997, which has since served as a mainstay for events such as village meetings and student cultural demonstrations; continually donating essentials and funds to the village hospital; supporting the Sinalei String Band by selling CD’s in the resort’s boutique, with funds going back to the band; and backing the local rugby club in the annual Sinalei Sevens Competition,” Nelson said.

“We also regularly sponsor the Poutasi Arts Centre, preschool, and ukulele school, local sewing lessons and the Poutasi Gardens, as well as the village community hall and local volunteer programs.”

“Finally, our farm-to-plate philosophy not only results in the freshest and tastiest seasonal meals at the resort’s onsite restaurant, but it also supports local farming families.”
