Excitement is ramping up for the Singapore Sail Grand Prix as the nine-strong flying F50 fleet hit the water ahead of racing this weekend.

Ahead of Round 8 of SailGP Season 3 in Singapore, 14 & 15 January, the full fleet took advantage of the crucial training time, getting to grips with the tight racecourse as they sailed just metres from the shoreline.

Light-to-moderate winds and smooth water are forecast for this weekend, with racing getting underway on January 14 & 15.

Two-time defending champions Australia currently sit at the top of the leaderboard with 60 points and a comfortable nine-point lead over the Kiwis in second place.

But New Zealand has just a one-point lead on Quentin Delapierre’s France in third. Great Britain in fourth will be vying for an event win while the pressure will be on the mid-fleet teams to move up the leaderboard.

It comes after SailGP commentators Todd Harris, Stevie Morrison and Emily Nagel said it was ‘now or never for Denmark, Canada and the United States’.

The nine F50s took to the water in Singapore for the first time.

Crews enjoyed light conditions, forecast to hold over the weekend.

The Kiwis are in second place, nine points behind Australia.

The Spanish team gets in some practice ahead of Saturday's start.

It's shaping up to be an exciting round for the inaugural Singapore Sail Grand Prix.

After Singapore, SailGP will head to Sydney for the Australia Sail Grand Prix on February 18 & 19 and then onto Christchurch for the New Zealand Sail Grand Prix on March 18 & 19.

From there, the league will travel onto the iconic waters of San Francisco Bay as the all-important winner-takes-all Grand Final gets underway.
