Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and now based in New York, Martin Broen is a diver and explorer as well as an industrial design and innovation expert who loves the natural world, capturing exceptional locations with his photographic skills.

“Photography is my true passion,” he says. “It allows me to get closer to nature and the many different species that live on it or under the water, and communicate their outstanding beauty to others visually. “Being a technical diver and underwater photographer gives me entry to the most magical underwater worlds that are not easily accessible,” he adds.

In 2021, Broen was named the Exploration Photographer of the Year by Oceanographic magazine and, in 2022, he won The International Landscape Photograph of the Year for ‘Cathedral’.

“Some say exploration is over, that we are too late to explore new lands and too early to explore new planets. Yet, there is this amazing underworld, as the Mayans call it, with hundreds of kilometres of caves to explore. This is the closest you will ever get to space exploration.”

These beautiful speleothems, which took millennia to form in the dry caves, can compete with even the most stunning gothic cathedrals of the world.

Surrounded by stalactites, everything is tinted red and smells of tannic acid, as if in hell.

Suspended in the light while floating on a hydrogen-sulphide cloud.

Fallen trees slowly decompose into an undisturbed mist of hydrogen sulphide.

After 65 minutes by DPV in the dark, the sinkhole appears.

The caves flooded 8,000 years ago, preserving megafauna remains.

Filled with bell-shaped and bacteria-generated formations, it’s an alien world below the waterline.
