Mighty Draak awakes

Emerging from its lair at Oceanco headquarters, 92.8-metre Draak showed off the results of a refit as a high-tech companion for Leviathan, the primary vessel of Oceanco owner, Gabe Newell.

Originally delivered by Oceanco in 2014 when it was called Equanimity, a luxury charter yacht featuring interiors by Winch Design, then known as Tranquility (2019 to 2023), Draak made its appearance at Oceanco shipyard in Zwijndrecht after a three-year rebuild to equip it for operations as Leviathan’s companion vessel.

Renamed Draak, meaning “Dragon” in Dutch, the 92.8-metre yacht has been transformed with enhanced capabilities and facilities, such as a dedicated dive tender and additional accommodation for guests and crew.

What makes this project more compelling is that it’s for charistmatic company owner, Gabe Newell. The co-founder, president and majority owner of video game company, Valve, Newell took over Oceanco in August 2025, hailed as “a hands-on visionary who respects the sea, the craft, and above all, the people who make it possible”.

Over three years, Draak underwent a comprehensive rebuild to adapt the yacht for a new operational role.

According to Forbes, Newell’s estimated net worth in 2025 was US$11 billion, making him the richest person in the gaming industry.

Newell is a serial yacht owner and avid scuba diver with a passion for the sea and deep respect for the craft of yacht designing and construction.

Announcing his buyout in August 2025, Oceanco stated: “Newell is drawn to yachting as a way to reconnect with the ocean, oneself and what really matters”.

They assured the yachting industry and afficionados, the Newell would eschew corporate buzz words and control, favouring instead to foster the interaction between “yacht builders and worldbuilders”.

Painting a poetic picture of collaboration among “dreamers and mad scientists”, Oceanco foresaw a future of innovation and invention, “plugging into a tribe of builders, dreamers, sailors, creatives and engineers and seeing what kind of future they can shape when no one’s holding them back. This isn’t a transaction, it’s ignition.”

111-metre Leviathan – named for a mythical sea creature – is Newell’s diesel electric superyacht, delivered in November 2025 and boasting a 15-station gaming lounge, a submarine garage, and spa, among many unique features.

The project involved Newell, YTMC and Y.CO, alongside the Oceanco Design team, Mark Berryman Design, the Leviathan crew and a network of Co-makers and suppliers.

Draak will now be prepared for sea trials ahead of delivery later this year.

At Leviathan’s launch, Oceanco CEO Marcel Onkenhout spruiked its status as “the most comfortable yacht ever designed, built, and delivered by Oceanco”.

Lavish praise indeed for a proudly Dutch builder with some 35 to 40 custom superyachts to its name since its inception in 1987 – with the largest, sailing yacht Koru at 127-metres and built for Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon in 2023.

Designed to operate in harmony, the project teams of Leviathan and Draak worked ‘hand in glove’ on design, engineering and operational decisions to ensure cross-functionality.

As Dan Morgan Managing Director of YTMC explained: “Strong collaboration between all parties was needed to re-engineer the yacht’s DNA. Integration of large-scale equipment optimised for operational efficiency and versatility will bring added robust capability to enhance the fleet’s program, as well as the guest and crew experience.”

Draak’s rebuild was overseen by  Life Cycle Support Project Manager Edwin Schneider, who was also part of the original build team. Oceanco’s detailed drawing and engineering package proved invaluable given the scale and complexity of the project.

The significant exterior modifications included the removal of the upper deck aft helideck to create the necessary clearance on the main deck aft for a large tender deck equipped with heavy-duty C-davits. A 12.6-tonne jib crane was installed on the upper aft deck to support hoisting manoeuvres.

The boarding platform was extended for added safety, accommodating retractable fenders and swim stairs, increasing Draak’s overall length by just over 1-metre.

Internally, the companion craft was reconfigured to support her new operational purpose. The former beach club and spa area has been converted into a fully equipped dive centre with a decompression chamber, while the main deck saloon was transformed into a large crew mess.

In the main saloon, a dedicated “chef’s lab” will raise the bar for the dining experiences of guests and crew. New adaptable cabins provide additional high-end crew accommodation capacity when required.

“The new layout required a complete overhaul of several key systems, including ventilation and electrical infrastructure,” Schneider commented.

On a refit of this scale, everything is interconnected and every decision had to be carefully evaluated for knock-on effects. With the extent of the changes, we effectively had to open up the entire yacht.”

Draak will now be prepared for sea trials ahead of delivery later this year, when she will be paired with Leviathan and the two, with proud owner and guests on board, will set off from the Netherlands bound for limitless adventure.
