New marinas in Southeast Asia are expanding the region’s capacity to accommodate superyachts, supporting increased interest from international vessels.

Alongside infrastructure developments, changes to regulations and improved services have contributed to making these destinations more accessible.

Over the past decade, superyacht agencies have worked with government officials to implement regulatory adjustments that facilitate entry and extended stays for luxury vessels.

Now, new marinas are being developed in Phuket, Bali, the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

Gordon Fernandes, co-founder of superyacht agency Asia Pacific Superyachts, says: “There are now world-class marinas and accommodation in nearly every Southeast Asia cruising region, with more coming.”

Thailand

In Phuket, Thailand, the newly developed One°15 Marina Panwa Phuket is located at the southern tip of the island, offering access to the Phi Phi Islands. The marina includes 171 berths for superyachts up to 61 metres, 25 hard-stand spaces and 80 dry-stack storage units. It is designed as an integrated marina club, with facilities that include yacht chartering, a spa and a hotel.

Another new facility, Port Macchanu, is situated on Phuket’s northeast shore. It provides berths for superyachts ranging from 40 to 80 metres, alongside onshore services such as restaurants, shops, a gourmet supermarket and a waterfront exhibition and convention area.

Adjacent to the marina, the Phuket Premier Boatyard services yachts up to 24 metres, while a newly developed shipyard is capable of accommodating yachts up to 60 metres.

Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka, Colombo City Marina is under development as a new luxury maritime hub. Located on key international shipping routes, it has been designed to strengthen the country’s role in the superyacht sector.

Priyantha Perera of Asia Pacific Superyachts Sri Lanka says: “The ‘Colombo City Marina’ is designed to become Sri Lanka’s new luxury maritime destination. Located at the crossroads of international maritime routes, the new marina ideally positions Sri Lanka to become a hub for luxury yachting.”

The marina includes 243 berths for mid-to-large-size yachts, with full-service facilities such as provisioning, maintenance, crew amenities and access to a yacht club. A separate facility within Port City Colombo can accommodate up to 250 mid-sized vessels. The site will also include hotels, retail outlets, dining venues and entertainment areas. It is currently the only full-service marina planned between Dubai and Phuket.

Indonesia

In Indonesia, Bali’s Port of Benoa is undergoing redevelopment as part of the Bali Maritime Tourism Hub (BMTH) project. The site is expected to serve both international and domestic yacht owners. Planned facilities include a yacht club, service centre, fuelling station, hospitality venues and commercial spaces.

Captain Thomas Taatjes, director of Asia Pacific Superyachts Indonesia, says: “The first full-service yacht/superyacht marina in Indonesia will accommodate 180 yachts, including more than 50 superyachts up to 90 metres. The marina will feature a state-of-the-art yacht service area, a travel lift capable of handling vessels up to 200 tonnes, a premium fuelling station and an array of prestigious amenities.

“The marina aims to be in place by mid-2026 and will set a new benchmark for yachting facilities in the region, one that will ensure Indonesia’s growing prominence as a global yachting destination.”

Maldives

In the Maldives, the exclusive Zamani Islands development will include the country’s first superyacht marina.

“Housing 120 berths, Atoll Estates’ new Zamani Islands will be an exclusive resort destination, with the Zamani Islands superyacht marina marking a new era for those seeking to cruise the Maldivian waters,” says Mohamed Hameed, director and general manager of Asia Pacific Superyachts Maldives.

“The pristine beauty and allure of these waters will be even more appealing to the global superyacht community with the launching of the superyacht marina in the next few years.”

The project includes eight islands spanning five kilometres within a natural lagoon. It will feature the country’s first yacht club and a 60,000-square-metre superyacht marina, as well as three resort concepts: an ultra-luxury resort, an experiential luxury resort and a modern lifestyle resort. The development includes 475 accommodation units and aims to establish the Maldives as a key destination for superyachts.
