10 September 2024
There’s a hum in the air at K’gari, the kind of quiet anticipation that thrums beneath the surface when something big is coming.
The countdown has begun! It’s less than a month until Illumina makes its debut, casting light and story across the island’s ancient bones. K’gari, once known as Fraser Island, is ready for something new.
Come 30 September 2024, the world will watch as Return to Sky flickers to life, the opening chapter of a light show unlike anything Australia has seen. The brainchild of light artist Bruce Ramus, it promises more than mere spectacle –it is a narrative in light and shadow, in movement and myth, a retelling of the island’s very creation.
As the amphitheatre, crafted with care for both sustainability and elegance, nears completion, the resort hums with activity. The allure is palpable. Pre-bookings for the Illumina Platinum and Gold packages have already spiked, securing front-row seats to this new era of entertainment.
David Hay, General Manager of Kingfisher Bay Resort, stands at the helm of this evolution. For over three decades, he has overseen the resort’s growth, watched as it became a beacon of eco-tourism, a bridge between the modern traveller and the wild heart of K’gari.
“We’ve always aimed to offer more than just an experience – we’ve aimed to connect people to the island itself, in ways that are both informative and deeply sustainable.”
And now, with Illumina, that connection deepens. A permanent installation, this light show marks a milestone not just for the resort, but for the island itself—a story told in the language of light, to be shared again and again.
This is only the latest in a series of innovations since SeaLink, Australia’s leading marine transport provider, took the helm in 2018. But Illumina is special. It is the first of its kind. It is a beacon, one that will call to the 1.8 million visitors who already journey here each year—and perhaps, to even more.
The timing is perfect. Hervey Bay, now accessible by direct flights from Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne, is basking in the kind of weather that makes paradise feel real. The sky is blue, the days endless, and the stage is almost set.
Four new packages offer everything a visitor could want – accommodation, fine dining before the show, and 4WD tours that traverse the island’s rugged beauty. It’s an immersive experience, a journey that begins the moment you set foot on K’gari and doesn’t end until the last light fades.
Come, watch as Illumina unfolds.
