Large boat owners on the NSW coast will be elated to learn about the 22 new berths available at Anchorage Marina in Port Stephens as of December 2017. Serious work has begun to upgrade marina facilities and install a whole new marina arm designed particularly for bigger boats sized over 20 metres.
Existing docks have been removed to allow room for the new arm. This means plenty of space for longer sailing and motor yachts to manoeuvre.
Over the upcoming weeks concrete pontoons will be lifted into place by crane, and contractors will continue upgrading the fuel dock. This will enable up to 100 boats to sail in and tie up for refuelling.
Patrick Whetter is the new Marina Manager and he has been witness to the rise in demand for larger, and more luxurious yachts over the last few years. Having worked for years in the Superyacht industry in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, Whetter is pleased with the improvements.
“It’s about time” he said.
“The last work was done quite a few years ago, and we just haven’t been able to accommodate those larger boats.
“The industry is growing, and we have more and more people needing berths for their high end, larger boats. It’s all about quality, and the experience on shore of course.”
Owing to the lengthy wait lists for mooring in Pittwater or the Harbour, Sydney boat owners may give significant thought to Port Stephens as a viable option for storing their boats.
The drive is a short one up the freeway and the beautiful environment provides many opportunities for boating both inshore and outside.
“We’ve got the best of both worlds here” said Patrick. “Blue water, protected anchorages, and creature comforts on shore. What’s not to love?”
Onshore, the Anchorage Hotel and Spa has numerous dining options to select from, in conjunction with a spa for pampering esteemed guests and a two-hour happy hour.
