Azimut and Volvo Penta have introduced the Seadeck 7 at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2024, marking the debut of the world’s first yacht to combine Volvo Penta IPS with hybrid power.
The Seadeck 7 is the first yacht to combine hybrid power with Volvo Penta IPS propulsion, featuring diesel engines, electric motors, and batteries that allow for hybrid operation without a generator. The yacht can cruise in pure electric mode at speeds up to 11 knots and remain at anchor with zero emissions for up to 12 hours, aiming to enhance onboard comfort and sustainability.
“When it comes to reducing CO2 emissions, our approach is aimed at generating tangible results now also by developing new solutions that we are already implementing at a prototype stage,” says Giovanna Vitelli, chair of Azimut|Benetti Group.
“Boats under 24 metres are the most prevalent in our waters; therefore, making a difference in this segment of vessels means making a difference for many owners.”
Vitelli continues: “The Volvo Penta hybrid-electric package installed on the Seadeck 7 has a mode of use similar to that of cars meaning that it shifts from electric to diesel engine based on speed. It guarantees simplicity of use reduced consumption and CO2 emissions and improved life on board. Everything is in place to change the rules of the game.”
The Seadeck 7 features Volvo Penta’s hybrid-electric package, providing integrated power management from helm to propeller with smooth transitions between power modes. The system offers near-silent cruising at low speeds and includes Joystick Docking in Electric Mode, enhancing manoeuvrability and access to emission-free zones.
Compared to traditional yachts of similar size, the Seadeck 7’s extensive use of carbon fibre and advanced hull design aims to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40 percent.
The two firms say their collaboration aims to refine the hybrid-electric package, introducing new drive modes and engine monitoring, and leveraging Volvo Penta’s global service network.
“Our collaboration with Azimut reflects our shared vision to push boundaries and elevate the boating experience through technological innovation and enhanced design,” says Johan Inden, president of the marine business at Volvo Penta.
“The Seadeck 7 equipped with our fully integrated hybrid-electric system marks a significant step forward in marine technology. It not only showcases the future of hybridisation and electrification but also is designed to ensure an easy and intuitive experience for owners and captains. And we believe an elevated experience will be the ultimate pacemaker for the sustainability transformation.”
The Seadeck 7, part of Azimut’s first hybrid series, incorporates carbon fibre construction and Volvo Penta’s hybrid-electric system, earning the Rina Green Plus Platinum certification for sustainable innovation. The yacht’s design focuses on weight reduction and enhanced comfort, featuring a reimagined cockpit and a sea-level outdoor lounge.
The hybrid-electric package on the Seadeck 7 offers various navigation options, including Pure Electric, Hybrid Standard, Hybrid Boost and the upcoming Cross-over mode.
In Hotel mode, the system powers all services with batteries for up to 12 hours without emissions, removing the need for a traditional generator.
Volvo Penta’s D13 IPS 1350 Hybrid package, paired with a 160kW electric motor, provides powerful performance and seamless operation. Integrated features include Electronic Vessel Control (EVC), Joystick Docking, and a Glass Cockpit System that displays drive modes and battery status.
Volvo Penta and Azimut say they will continue optimising the Seadeck 7’s hybrid-electric package throughout 2024, aiming to establish it as a core offering in Azimut’s Seadeck series.
The yacht is available for pre-order with deliveries starting in 2026 and is on display at the Cannes Yachting Festival from 10 to 15 September 2024.
