The Grand Banks 62 is set to make its global debut at the Palm Beach International Boat Show in Florida, from 19 to 23 March 2025.
Malaysia-based boatbuilder Grand Banks Yachts says the latest model continues its approach to long-range cruising, incorporating design elements and engineering advancements developed under the leadership of ocean racer and shipwright Mark Richards.
“There is simply no other long-range cruising design on the water like this new Grand Banks,” says Richards. “I remember as a kid working on GB42s coming into the yard. Decades later, I take this stewardship of the company very seriously every day. The principles you’ll see in the Grand Banks 62 define the 60 series, and, indeed our entire range.
“Less weight. More strength. Less fuel burn. More range. More speed, less resistance, and of course all this means more efficiency, resulting in lower emissions. I challenge anyone to simply compare the numbers, take our boat for a sea trial, and take a similar-size trawler-yacht or motor yacht, and you’ll realise there is no comparison.”
Richards continues, “The numbers tell the entire story, and, to demonstrate these numbers, you just need to take a look at her wake at any speed.”
Initial sea trials indicate that the Grand Banks 62 reaches a top speed of 30 knots, with a high cruise speed of 27 knots. At 20 knots, the vessel has a total fuel burn rate of 38 gallons per hour, while a range of 2,000 nautical miles with a 10 percent reserve is achievable at 10 knots.
The yacht maintains a near-identical running angle across its speed range, allowing for ocean-crossing capability without excessive motion at displacement speeds.
Speed and trim adjustments based on sea conditions enhance onboard comfort and safety.
The Grand Banks 62 is powered by twin Volvo D13 engines, rated at 900 horsepower each, using straight shafts with Twin Disc MGX 5096A marine transmissions as standard. Alternative engine options include twin Volvo D13s with shaft drives rated at 1,000 horsepower each or Volvo IPS 1200S rated at 900 horsepower each.
“Our buyers appreciate our philosophy that speed, range, and efficiency are not mutually exclusive,” says Richards. “My Grand Banks stewardship that began more than 11 years ago didn’t start with asking about how we can keep doing everything the same as everyone else.
“Instead, the mission is to focus on how can we lead the way and deliver ground-breaking designs that represent an entirely new era of long-range cruising.”
The Grand Banks 62 incorporates V-Warp technology, which has been a feature of all Grand Banks models since 2016. This design approach combines hull form, construction materials, and manufacturing processes to enhance efficiency. Key design elements include a sharp bow entry, curved midsection, and minimal deadrise at the transom.
The structure is built using a precise resin-to-fibre ratio of E-Glass, unidirectional, and multi-axial fibre, which is then fused to a carbon fibre framework, including bulkheads, deck and superstructure.
Available in both Flybridge and Skylounge configurations, the Grand Banks 62 builds upon the Grand Banks 60, offering additional interior volume.
The extended length allows for a larger starboard guest stateroom featuring an athwartships double bed, a single berth, and a utility area with a washer/dryer. This model also includes an ensuite for the starboard guest cabin, resulting in a three-stateroom, three-head layout.
The master stateroom is positioned amidships and features a king bed, ensuite with a large shower, and extensive storage. The forward VIP stateroom includes a queen berth and a dedicated head. The main deck design incorporates large windows in the saloon, helm area, and aft galley, providing natural light and ventilation. The lower helm and companion seat layout facilitates navigation in varying conditions.
Several interior layouts are available, including the Skylounge version, which has been popular on the Grand Banks 85. Owners can customise elements to suit their preferences.
“The Palm Beach International Boat Show is an ideal venue to unveil the latest GB to our owners, the media, and loyal Grand Banks enthusiasts,” says Richards.
“We’re looking forward to laying out the red carpet for everyone who would like to view the new Grand Banks 62.”
Grand Banks Yachts, established in 1956, has developed a range of long-range cruising yachts, including the GB54, GB60, GB62, and GB85, as well as the Downeaster models Eastbay 44 and Eastbay 60. The company operates a shipyard in Pasir Gudang, Malaysia, with sales and service offices in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
The Grand Banks 62 will be on display at the Palm Beach International Boat Show at Ramp 8, Slip 224.
