Among winners including Porsche and Samsung at the 2018 German Design Awards, luxury safe manufacturer Buben&Zorweg has scooped the coveted top prize in the Excellent Product Design, Luxury Goods category.

The Buben&Zorweg Galaxy Deluxe, designed to house 17 watches, combines sumptuous hand-sewn Italian nappa leather interiors with a high gloss exotic macassar and poplar wood exterior that shimmers in the light. The Galaxy’s crowning glory is the Buben&Zorweg timepiece, complete only after 500 hours of control testing in the company’s atelier d’horlogerie. With an 8 day Swiss escapement, its inner balance spring remains visible at the heart of its rhodium plated, brushed stainless steel dial.

The German Design Award 45-strong judging panel, comprising academics and global design industry CEOs noted: “The exclusive Galaxy safe provides striking proof that a safe can also be an impressive decorative furnishing. The exterior design of the safe is carried over to its interior through the use of superb materials’.

The same can be said of all Buben&Zorweg creations – each one masterfully designed to enable sybarites to savour and safeguard their most treasured possessions, while routinely incorporating high security technology originally designed for Swiss bank vaults.

From gold bars glittering behind bullet proof glass, to antiquities concealed underground before elevating at the touch of a button, and a safe embroidered with crocodile leather, incorporating a humidor, bar and sound system, Buben&Zorweg has a history of combining stellar design with star performance.

These electromechanical features are made possible by Buben&Zorweg’s head of design; Eberhard Hagmann, who during a career spanning over three decades, has won over 40 international design awards. Under Eberhard Hagmann’s creative leadership, specialist designers, engineers and craftspeople all come together to bring to life Buben&Zorweg’s world-class masterpieces.

The Buben&Zorweg Illusion collection takes the form of an ornamental, sculptural column, inspired by the Clock Tower in Dubai.

Concealing its owner’s treasures deep within, it is only when the Illusion is summoned to elegantly open up by elevating, that its contents and functionality become apparent. The Orion, named after a star constellation and the son of Olympic deity Poseidon, is a safe entirely bedecked in cushioned napa leather. The creation of the Agartos combined the expertise of 10 technology, engineering and design specialists and incorporates a patented Magic Slide touch opening and closing system.

“Like stars gravitationally bound to the Galaxy in which they are located, the treasures you keep in The Galaxy Deluxe are going nowhere. It took 3 years to perfect the Galaxy Deluxe and we’re over the moon with this award,” says Buben&Zorweg managing director Christian Zorweg.
